Urge Your Massachusetts Legislator to Oppose Increase on Truancy Penalty

The Home School Legal Defense Association opposes H.2556, sponsored by Representative Tackey Chan. This legislation would increase fines for truancy from $20 to $50 per day.

Truancy already is a criminal offence; there is no need to increase monetary fines for those found guilty of the crime.

As a matter of practice,  few schools use truancy procedures to pursue students, preferring to turn truancy matters over to the Department of Children and Families for educational neglect investigation.  HSLDA finds this tactic objectionable, as we have seen numerous parents subjected to truancy investigations for issues that do not necessarily involve children failing to attend school.

A hearing will be held at 1 p.m., September 12 on 09/12/2017 at 1:00 pm in Room(s): A-1 at the  Massachusetts Statehouse. Although your presence is not required, we are asking you to email the committee and express your position on the bill.
